Welcome to the Nguyen Lab in the Department of BioEngineering at the Moffitt Cancer Center!
We are a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers passionate about understanding how cancer cells interact with their surrounding microenvironment, adapt to stress, and develop resistance to therapy.
By integrating bioengineering, cancer biology, advanced imaging, and patient-derived tumor models, we aim to develop innovative experimental platforms to investigate cancer progression, tumor–immune interactions, and therapeutic response.
Our strength lies in the diverse backgrounds, expertise, and perspectives of our team members. Meet the people behind our science!
Dr. Laxmi Swetha Karnam, PhD.
Post-Doctoral Fellow
2024 Moffitt Junior Scientist Research Partnership JSPR Award Recipient.
Dr. Karanam is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow at Moffitt Cancer Center. Prior to joining Moffitt, she completed a postdoctoral research fellowship at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. She earned her PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, following a Master’s degree in Pharmacology and Toxicology from the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research. Her research interests focus on cancer biology and nano-drug delivery systems targeting the tumor microenvironment. She is excited to work in Dr. Nguyen’s lab, exploring patient avatar models and hydrogel delivery systems for translational and clinical applications
Dr. Phillip P. Pham, MD
Medical Ocology Fellow
Mentors: Drs. Jingsong Zhang, MD & Duy T. Nguyen, PhD
Dr. Pham is currently a Hematology/Oncology Fellow at Moffitt Cancer Center. He completed his Internal Medicine residency at Indiana University, followed by an additional year as Chief Resident in 2025. Originally from Tampa, Florida, he earned his undergraduate degree from the University of South Florida. His research interests focus on translational oncology, particularly genitourinary cancers. He is excited to have the opportunity to work in Dr. Nguyen’s lab, exploring microtumors and their clinical applications.
Harrison M. Haley, M.S.B.E.
Research Associate I & Research Safety Liaison
Harrison holds a Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering from the University of South Florida, where his graduate research centered on 3D bioprinting, collagen fiber alignment, and a tumor microenviromental platform. Through his work characterizing cell-matrix dynamics and tissue microenvironments, he developed advanced biofabrication methods to create physiologically relevant 3D tissue models. His long-term goal is to drive innovation and make a meaningful impact at the intersection of biomedical engineering, biomaterials, and translational medicine.
Laura Mejia, B.S.
Research Associate I & Laboratory Manager
Laura Mejia came to the United States from Colombia to study at the University of Miami as a full-tuition scholarship recipient and Foote Fellow. She earned her B.S. in Biomedical Engineering with a concentration in Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering. As a Research Associate in the Nguyen Lab, she develops and characterizes patient-derived microtumor models and investigates how mechanical cues influence cancer-cell dormancy and reawakening. Her long-term goal is to translate insights into cancer biology into strategies that improve treatment and patient outcomes.
Shima Albagdady B.S.
Research Assistant - Masters Student
Program: Graduate Level Oncology Warriors (GLOW)
Shima graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Biochemical Engineering and is currently pursuing her master’s degree in Biochemical Engineering at the University of South Florida, with a concentration in Molecular Medicine and Drug Delivery. She is currently conducting research in Dr. Nguyen’s lab at Moffitt Cancer Center. Her research interests include developing hydrogel-based drug and vaccine delivery systems for cancer treatment.
Justin Ni
Research Assistant - Undergraduate
Program: Moffitt Students Pursuing Undergraduate Research (SPUR) Program 2026
Justin is a second-year undergraduate student at the University of South Florida, majoring in Biomedical Sciences and pursuing the seven-year BS/MD program. Through his research in the Nguyen Lab at Moffitt Cancer Center, he hopes to deepen his understanding of cancer biology, develop valuable research skills, and contribute to innovative approaches to cancer treatment. His long-term goal is to make a meaningful impact at the intersection of biomedical research and medicine.
Cosette Kim
Program: Summer Program for the Advancement of Research Knowledge (SPARK) 2026.
Cosette Kim is a third-year Biomedical Engineering student at the Georgia Institute of Technology, minoring in Public Policy. In the summer of 2025, she worked in Dr. Nguyen’s lab, contributing to the development and optimization of a tunable 3D-bioprinted hybrid microgel–collagen platform (THMCP) to engineer ex vivo models of the tumor extracellular matrix. Her research focused on recapitulating tumor microenvironment heterogeneity and quantifying immune and cancer cell migration using machine learning and confocal microscopy. She was subsequently selected to participate in the SPARK program in the summer of 2026.
At Georgia Tech, Cosette is a member of the Laboratory for Synthetic Immunity, where she contributes to research focused on engineering immune-based medicines to intercept and treat human disease. She is interested in the intersection of biomedical engineering, immunology, and public policy to advance human health and is excited to see how these fields evolve in the future.
Outside the lab, Cosette enjoys playing tennis, reading, watching soccer, and spending time with family and friends.

A Community United by a Mission
Working at Moffitt Cancer Center is more than a career as it is an opportunity to contribute to a shared mission: the prevention and cure of cancer. As Florida’s only NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, Moffitt brings together scientists, physicians, engineers, trainees, and staff with different expertise but a common purpose. For our lab, it is an extraordinary environment to explore how engineering and the physical sciences can contribute to understanding cancer and improving patient care.
